劇情描述三關節度使張良棟元帥之女張淑君，為前任守將林賢忠之子林登科指腹為婚的未婚妻。
一日，沙陀國大將軍佐車崙出獵時巧遇張淑君，驚為天人，執意迎娶被拒，於是由愛生恨，興師攻關。
適逢林登科帶著弟弟林登悌，奉父母之命前來張家認親，剛好解救張元帥等人，但在交戰中卻也因此受傷。
戰後，張元帥即命女兒與女婿一同返回林家完婚。
林母刁氏，見子婚後身體因傷日漸衰弱，視淑君為不祥之女，百般刁難，終至逐出家門。
淑君萬念俱灰欲投江自盡，恰好被前來補送嫁妝的妹妹淑珍所救。
淑珍獲知淑君所受委曲，於是設計假結婚嫁給林登悌，故意扮作惡媳婦作弄刁氏。
